The Breakthrough of '48: When Civil Rights Won the White House

This one-hour radio program highlights the 1948 contest, when Minneapolis Mayor Hubert Humphrey called on his party to “walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights.” In protest, Southern Democrats defected. President Harry Truman’s reelection campaign centered on civil rights; his victory set the stage for groundbreaking 1960s civil rights laws. Based on Samuel Freedman’s book “Into the Bright Sunshine,” this documentary features compelling interviews and archival audio and is of utmost national relevance.
